Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos on Sunday urged Bogota Mayor Gustavo Petro to push down the capital city’s murder rate to a one-digit number.
The president hailed Petro for securing a 24% drop in homicides over the past year, but asked the Bogota mayor to further lower the rate from 16 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants to below 10 in 2014.
“I am sending this message to Mayor Petro: Let’s work together. These policemen are able, the citizens — the bogotanos are able,” Santos said while inaugurating a new police unit.
