Ten Koreans travelling with false documents have been arrested on a bus in Colombia’s southwestern Cauca department, local media reported Monday.
Newspaper El Espectador wrote the group, consisting of three women and seven men, was on the route to travel from Ecuador to Panama or with the aim of eventually reaching the United States.
However, newspaper El Tiempo listed Venezuela and Europe as possible destinations for the group.
When asked to show their documents, the Koreans presented visas legalizing their presence in Colombia. Police concluded these permits were false. Furthermore, the foreigners did not carry passports and did not speak Spanish.
Authorities did not specify whether the individuals were North or South Koreans.
According to El Tiempo, the group had boarded the bus in the city of Ipiales on the border with Ecuador. They allegedly paid some $110 for the bus driver to take them to Colombia’s third largest city, Cali.
The ten individuals were taken to the immigration office in Popayan, the capital of Cauca, where authorities would try to verify the legality of their presence on Colombian territory, wrote El Espectador.
