Colombia is safe for air travel, claimed the director of Colombia’s air transportation authority during the Third Pan American Security Summit in Bogota, Radio Caracol reported Thursday.
In the last year there were no recorded air-travel related deaths, while the number of accidents has decreased by 84% since 2005, according to Santiago Castro, the director of Civil Aeronautics.
“ We reject any claim stating that flying in Colombia is not safe, because we did not say it [was safe], the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) affirmed it, through its audits and especially the last one at the beginning of 2012, it confirmed that Colombia was a safe country to fly in” said Castro adding that Colombia was the only country in Latin America who voluntarily asked to be audited.
The Federal Aviation Administration in the United States has placed Colombia under Category one, the highest category for meeting ICAO standards, indicating a high level of safety for North American airlines to fly into the country.
