U.S. authorities have neither denied nor confirmed Colombian claims that the leader of the country’s biggest drug organization “The Rastrojos” surrendered to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the Associated Press (AP) reported Monday.
A spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in New York’s Eastern District, Robert Nardoza, told the press agency he could neither confirm nor deny Colombian deputy police director Gen. Jose Robert Leon’s statement that Jose Antonio Calle, alias “Comba” was flown to New York after he surrendered to American drug agents on the Caribbean island of Aruba.
Nardoza would not discuss why the indictment was not available in the U.S. federal court system’s online electronic database.
The DEA also declined to comment, reported AP.
The U.S. government had a $5 million reward out for Calle, who, according to Leon, turned himself over to U.S. DEA agents in Aruba, just off the Caribbean coast of Colombia and Venezuela, on Friday.
