The Colombian soccer federation has postponed the decision whether to accept the resignation of Hernan Dario Gomez, the national team’s coach who resigned after admitting to hitting a woman in a bar.
The executive board of the federation Colfutbol sent out a press release Thursday in which it said to “regrets and rejects the facts in which Hernan Dario Gomez, head coach of the national team, has been involved.”
However, the board had not made a decision about Gomez’ resignation, “considering that the due issue requires calm, reflective analysis that analyzes the sports, and social and human aspects.”
According to Colfutbol, a new meeting of the board was scheduled in which it will define the fate of the coach.
Gomez’ physical aggression towards the woman caused a storm of reactions. The players of the Colombian team have asked their coach to stay on, while critics demanded his immediate resignation after the scandal broke. One senator generated a wave of criticism of her own after defending the coach saying that “if my husband hit me, it would be because I deserved it.”
