Colombia’s health ministry said Monday that the Zika epidemic that affected almost 100,000 in the country is over.
The mosquito-borne disease entered Colombia in September last year and generated major concerns about its links to deformations of unborn children.
However, following a major offensive to curb the spreading of the disease and the vaccination of thousands, the health ministry said that the virus is now under control.
According to the latest statistics, some 600 Colombians continue to be affected per week, not enough to determine the virus an epidemic.
In the year the virus was highly active in Colombia, some 17,730 pregnant women were monitored but only a few newly-born children were found to have microcephaly, the illness related to Zika.
