Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Thursday thanked Colombia for sending aid for victims of heavy rains that killed 31 people in the Caribbean coast of the socialist country.
Chavez expressed his gratitude that Colombia had sent aid, despite suffering from an immensely destructive rainy season itself.
“In Colombia more than 130 people died and one million and a half are victims. We will send the Colombian people our heart, our love, our solidarity, our brotherhood,” Chavez was quoted as saying by state news agency AVN.
“Last week we sent some aid to Colombia and now Colombia is sending us aid. Because of this I would like to thank the Colombian government and President [Juan Manuel] Santos for sending us humanitarian aid,” Chavez said.
Heavy rains have tortured Colombia since March and have intensified in Venezuela over the past few weeks. The rains are blamed on “La Niña,” a weather phenomenon that every few years brings excessive rains to the region.
