40 injured in bus crash in southwest Colombia

by Adriaan Alsema June 8, 2013

Some 40 people were injured in a traffic accident in the southwest of Colombia on Saturday when their bus crashed.

According to the police, the accident took place in the Cauca department, on the Pan-American Highway connecting the city of Pereira to the Ecuadorean border.

The police initially blamed the driver of the bus, owned by travel company ECO, for driving irresponsibly and crashing his bus into the side railing after overtaking vehicles waiting for a roadblock.

Nevertheless, transit police were sent to the scene to corroborate the claims.

Due to the accident and the subsequent police investigation, the highway was closed for several hours.

All the injured were taken to hospitals in department capital Popayan and the village of Piendamo near where the accident took place.
