2 dead, 11 wounded in ‘FARC attack’ in northeast Colombia

An attack attributed to Colombia’s largest rebel group FARC on Saturday left two civilians dead and some 11 people wounded in the northeastern Arauca department.

According to the army, the FARC rebels launched a grenade against a military checkpoint, leading to the death of one three-year-old child and his father. “In addition, 11 people were wounded, nine of them civilians and two of our soldiers,” said the commander of the army’s 18th Brigade, Colonel Jhon Zambrano.

The colonel said the grenade was launched from inside a civilian home. The attack, which authorities attributed to the FARC’s 10th Front, took place in the Tame municipality, close to the Venezuelan border, which is considered a hot spot for the FARC and the smaller ELN rebel group alike.

According to the army, alias “Sapo Macho” and “Yei,” under the command of alias “Jainover,” one of the 10th Front’s leaders, are responsible for the attack.

The FARC is currently engaged in peace talks with the Colombian government in Havana, Cuba. Meanwhile, combat in Colombia has continued, with some 45 FARC attacks registered during the month of April.
