13 FARC rebels captured in southwest Colombia

by Olle Ohlsen Pettersson April 29, 2013

The Colombian armed forces on Sunday captured 13 suspected FARC rebels in the southwestern Nariño department.

The presumed rebels were arrested in the Pacific Tumaco municipality, close to the Ecuadorean border, in a joint operation between the army and the navy. According to reports, one alleged FARC member was also killed in the fighting leading up to the arrests.

Three rifles, one pistol, twelve electric detonators and an abundance of war material were seized from the alleged rebels, who will answer to charges of terrorism, drug trafficking and weapons possession.

Authorities said the rebels belonged to the FARC’s Daniel Aldana Column, which has been held responsible for several recent attacks in the area.
