Approximately 1,200 Colombian convicts will be transferred from Ecuador to Colombia after the Colombian government signs a deal with Ecuador in April.
The Colombian and Ecuadorian ministers of justice on Monday signed a preliminary agreement that will eventually lead to the release of over a thousand prisoners from their Ecuadorian prisons who will then be shipped to their new homes — Colombian jails. The deal also includes the transfer of 53 Ecuadorean prisoners from Colombia who will move back to their native soil to finish out their sentences.
According to Caracol Radio, both country’s authorities will study the status of each applicable inmate before facilitating the transfer.
Similar agreements led to the transfer of about 200 imprisoned Colombian nationals from Costa Rica, Spain, and Mexico in 2012.
