Windstorms in Colombia affect more than 27,000 families

by Esteban Refshauge September 10, 2012

Gale force winds have affected more than 27,000 families and 180 municipalities across Colombia since June, claimed the director of the Office of Risk Management Monday.

Speaking with Caracol Radio, Carlos Ivan Marquez confirmed that approximately 237 windstorms have wrecked havoc mainly in the northern departments of Cordoba. Bolivar, Atlantico and Cesar, including tornadoes in the municipalities of Sabanalarga and San Marcos.

The strong winds would likely continue, “until the end of November” Marquez claimed.

According to Marquez, the Colombian government has already allocated nearly $5.5 million to assist the families most affected by the turbulent weather.

There are currently 14 departments on alert due to the annual weather phenomena.
