Venezuela surrenders top ‘Rastrojos’ leader to Colombia

by Katharina Wecker July 25, 2012

Venezuela handed “Diego Rastrojo,” one of the founders of drug gang “Los Rastrojos,” over to Colombia Wednesday.

Diego Rastrojo, whose real name is one Diego Perez Henao, was handed over to the Colombian police in the early hours of Wednesday.

The drug lord was arrested on June 3 in an operation carried out by Venezuelan armed forces using Colombian intelligence.

Authorities will now decide whether to extradite Diego Rastrojo to the U.S. where he is wanted on drug trafficking charges.

Los Rastrojos have suffered a series of blows recently. In May, “Comba,” one of the supreme leaders of the drug gang, reportedly surrendered to U.S. authorities and “Pizarro,” who according to local media was expected to take Diego Rastrojo’s place, was arrested by Colombia’s police.
