Contaminated chicken from the United States could have a devastating effect on Colombian poultry, according to the president of the Colombian National Poultry Federation [Fenavi], reported Caracol Radio Monday.
The warning issued by Andres Moncada comes amid reports of avian flu affecting major areas of the U.S., just as the free trade agreement between the two countries was to increase in the amount of U.S. poultry imported by Colombia.
Moncada urged caution in the importation of U.S. poultry, as he warned of the danger to consumers should the virus mutate.
The Fenavi president insisted that he was not seeking barriers to trade but only sought a ban on poultry from areas affected by the outbreak.
