Unemployment in Colombia falls to lowest rate in decade: Govt

Unemployment in Colombia in June fell to 9.2% across the nation and to 11.2% in urban areas, both of which are lower than the same month last year, the government’s statistics agency said Wednesday.

According to the government’s monthly report, June’s unemployment rate is the lowest in at least a decade.  The rate of unemployment had even fallen between May and June this year, decreasing by 0.2%. Unemployment went down from 10% in June of last year.

70% of Colombia’s jobs are concentrated in large urban areas, such as the cities of Bogota and Medellin.

Unemployment was highest in the cities Quibdo (18.2%), Popayan (16.9%) and Cucuta (15.5%), and lowest in the cities of Barranquilla (8.3%), Bogota (9.1%) and Riohacha (9.2%)
