Toto la Momposina receives lifetime achievement award

by Toni Peters November 25, 2011

Toto la Momposina

Legendary Colombian singer Toto la Momposina received Thursday the National Life and Work Award from the Ministry of Culture, El Espectador newspaper reported.

The jury said she “represents, in the best possible manner, the values of Colombia as a musical country for her creativity, professional rigor, social commitment, and generosity in terms of teaching.

“She has gained the acclaim of the public and of her colleagues, maybe both nationally and internationally, and has taken her work – our music – to many countries.”

The National Life and Work Prize was created in 2002. It represents the highest honor that can be bestowed on cultural creators and researchers whose work has been an outstanding cultural express, in local, national and international arenas.

Toto La Momposina features on the track “Latinoamerica” by popular Puerto Rican urban fusion group Calle 13.
