Supreme Court orders arrest of ex-congressman wanted in Bogota corruption scandal

by Edward Fox April 29, 2011

Colombia news - german olano

The Supreme Court ordered the arrest of former Congressman German Olano on Thursday for his part in the Bogota public works corruption scandal.

The investigative unit of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the CTI, have now begun their search for Olano who is believed to have left Colombia for the United States on March 4, reports El Tiempo.

The CTI have asked the DAS for any records they might have as to his movements internationally.

Olano was barred from holding public office for 15 years by the inspector general in February for fraudulently awarding public works contracts in Bogota and demanding a commission from private companies for doing so. It is part of the same scandal that saw Senator Ivan Moreno arrested on Thursday.

The former congressman was subsequently expelled from the Colombian Liberal Party in March for his actions.

Olano’s lawyer Diego Corredor Beltran told W Radio on Friday morning that his client will return to Colombia from the U.S. “in the next two or three days.”

He added that Olano has frequently requested that he be called to testify since March and that he doesn’t understand why the arrest warrant has been handed down since his client has always been ready to cooperate.
