Supreme Court charges ex-congresswoman with pressuring judge

by Travis Mannon October 19, 2011

Colombia news - lucero cortes

The Supreme Court formally indicted former U Party congresswoman and ex-TV star Lucero Cortes for influence peddling on Wednesday, Colombian media reported.

Cortes has been under house arrest since late April for allegedly trying to influence Judge Rafael Velez Fernandez of the Superior Judicial Council, who was presiding over a case against her husband, businessman Manuel Rincon Guevara.

Investigators also tried to determine whether or not Cortes pressured judges to punish the lawyer who filed charges against Rincon.

The ex-legislator has argued that the evidence against her is inconsistent and comes from a witness who has a criminal record and is a “personal enemy.”
