Soccer: Atletico Nacional win Colombian league title

by Jonathan Roorda June 19, 2011

Atletico Nacional are champions of the 2011 Liga Postobon I after beating La Equidad on penalties. The tie ended 3-3 on aggregate.

After La Equidad won the first leg 2-1, Nacional needed a win at home in order to clinch the title or at least force a penalty shoot-out.

The match at Medellin‘s Atanasio Girardot stadium had been under way for 43 minutes when Nacional broke the deadlock through Dorlan Pabon. And with ten minutes to go, Carlos Renteria scored what looked like the deciding goal in this final.

But La Equidad never gave up, and a cross from Roberto Polo hit the net behind Nacional goalkeeper Gaston Pezzuti.

The latter would soon be the hero however, as the goalkeeper blocked three of La Equidad’s four penalties in the shoot-out.

The title is Nacional’s 11th in total, which leaves them just two behind historical leaders Millonarios and America de Cali. La Equidad have yet to win their first league trophy.
