Shakira wishes ‘Gabo’ Garcia Marquez a happy birthday

by Marc Hall March 6, 2012

Colombia news - Shakira and Garcia Marquez

Colombian sweetheart Shakira wished fellow national treasure Gabriel Garcia Marquez a happy 85th birthday Tuesday.

The message came through the singer’s Twitter account, on which she posted, “Congratulations to Gabriel Garcia Marquez on his day! We love Gabo! Shak.”

“Gabo” and “Shak’s” friendship dates from when she was just starting out as a singer. Shakira recently visited the literature great in Mexico.

In 1991, the author of “One Hundred Years of Solitude” published an article in Cambio magazine in which he expressed his admiration for his compatriot, praising her ever-changing hairstyles. “Black braids yesterday, red today, green tomorrow…,” he said admiringly.

We expect that dinner-table conversations between the two are riveting. Shakira recently revealed to be quite the intellectual juggernaut herself, with an I.Q. of 140.
