Shakira: LatAm should break conformity

by Kathryn Thompson April 5, 2011

Colombia news - Shakira

Colombian diva Shakira has told Latin Americans to leave their conformist mentality behind and aim higher.

During an interview with Televisa, the philanthropist pop star said Latin Americans should break away from the conformity imposed for many years since colonization and not settle for the crumbs thrown their way.

She explained that she is intent on improving efforts to eradicate “the chains of poverty in the world” and said that it “is a lie that if you are born poor, you have to die poor.” “That is a lie of colonization that we have had to swallow for many centuries. The way to eradicate poverty is education,” said Shakira, director of early childhood education charity “Fundacion Alas.”

The singer said she is motivated to prove herself as an artist, to be a good person “every day, to entertain an audience and spread energy,” not just because of the pay check.

She added that although she has access to many things, it does not stop her from helping realize the dreams of others.

Shakira is currently in Mexico for her “Sale el Sol” world tour.
