Santos praises record-breaking medal in 2012 Olympics

by Sarah Kinosian August 6, 2012

Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos praised Caterine Ibarguen’s triple jump medal via Twitter.

Santos called the jump and Colombia’s fourth medal “the greatest achievement for Colombia,” in a Tweet Sunday.

Ibuargen’s medal brings Colombia’s score to three silver medals and one bronze, an all-time record for the country since it started participating in the Olympics in 1932.

The Colombian athlete was beaten in the final by Kazakhstan’s Olga Rypakova who jumped 14.98 meters, 18 centimeters further than Ibuargen.

Santos has been extremely attentive to his country’s performance at the 2012 games, congratulating cyclist Rigoberto Uran and weight lifter Oscar Figueroa on their silver medals and Yuri Alvear on her bronze in Judo.
