Colombia President Juan Manuel Santos on Monday announced a national security plan aimed at giving peace of mind to those traveling in Colombia during the holy week.
As part of the plan, 170,000 police officers will be stationed at strategic locations across the country such as alongside roads, near churches and “anywhere else that requires special care,” according to Santos.
The president said that he will also be reinforcing ‘El Plan de Cuadrantes’, an urban security plan that strives for an increase in the number of police officers in key locations. In addition, Colombia’s intelligence agencies will be prepared to “prevent any kind of situation” which may disrupt the course of events during one of Colombia’s most important holidays of the year.
Areas close to hotels, seaside resorts and other tourist areas “will have a greater police presence so that Colombians who wish to travel in the country feel safer,” Santos explained.
The Holy Week, which starts over the weekend, is one of Colombia’s most popular holidays during which hundreds of thousands of Colombians take to the road to spend the catholic holiday elsewhere.
