Release of FARC hostages on hold

by Hannah Aronowitz January 11, 2011

Colombia news - hostages

The release of five hostages held by the FARC is on hold until the government, the rebels, and mediators can reach an agreement on the security protocol, reported newspaper El Espectador Tuesday.

Once an agreement is reached, the coordinates of the site where the hostages are being held will be given to former Colombian senator Piedad Cordoba, who is in Brazil finalizing details on the logistics of the release operation.

“The bottom line is that the operation will not begin until the senator is in possession of the coordinates and according to the information we have from her colleagues, this information has not been released and it could take a day, a week or a month,” Red Cross representative Christopher Beney told the newspaper.

The FARC announced their intention to release the hostages on December 8. The actual release is not expected to take place before the second half of January.
