Priest to serve 7 years for sexual abuse of child

A Colombian court sentenced a priest and former teacher to over seven years in prison for sexually abusing his 10-year-old student, reported the news site Terra Friday.

An attorney at the Prosecutor General’s Office in Bogota announced that Jairo Alzate Cardona received a sentence of precisely seven years, one month and 10 days for forcing a student to submit to sexual practices.

The offenses occurred during Cardona’s term as a teacher in at the College of Pereira in the Colombian department of Risaralda. The most recent occurrence was in April 2008.

According to the prosecutor, the priest pressured the child into silence by threatening his mother and cousin.

Cardona faces two more trials for the same crimes, allegedly occurring in 2002 and 2008.
