Colombia news - compay

Authorities captured the alleged assassin leader of a criminal organization which operates in Medellin, the National Police announced Tuesday.

The 35-year-old alleged crime boss, alias “Compay,” was captured in Bogota after two months of evading police. He fled to to the capital city after learning about a warrant for his arrest.

The commander of the Valle de Aburra Metropolitan Police said, “we are neutralizing one of the most dangerous criminals with the most criminal activity in this criminal organization.”

Compay allegedly belongs to “Los Bananeros,” a criminal gang associated with “Los Mondogueros.” Los Bananeros mostly operate in Comuna 6 in Medellin and are known for extorting up to 100 public transportation carriers around the city. The organization is involved in micro narco-trafficking, firearms trafficking, and extortion in the residential, commercial, and transportation sectors.

After his capture, Compay was transferred to Medellin to a prison in Bellavista to await trial.

According to the police, they have captured 491 members of criminal gangs in 2011.
