A Peruvian teenager has drowned following a boating accident in the Colombian Amazon, Colombia’s Navy reported on Monday.

A statement released on the navy’s website confirmed that Carol Majipo, a 17 year old Peruvian national, drowned after the tourist boat she was traveling in collided with a tree.

According to the Navy, the Peruvian flagged ship, named “Flipper 2,” was sailing in Colombian waters when the accident occurred.

The boat was carrying 20 individuals, four of which are still missing, local rescue authorities told Colombia Reports.

Citizens of the United States, Colombia, Peru, Russia and India were among those on board.

The Navy stated that although search and rescue operations for remaining survivors are ongoing, strong currents in the area are making the process difficult.

The accident occurred near the Colombian town of Isla Loreto, as the tour boat was making its way from Iquitos to Santa Rosa, Peru.
