Peñalosa in statistical tie with Petro in Bogota mayoral election

by Travis Mannon July 29, 2011

Former Mayor Enrique Peñalosa was statistically tied with independent candidate Gustavo Petro in the latest poll for the Bogota mayoral race, various media reported Friday.

Although Peñalosa leads Petro by 2.5 points in the most recent poll conducted by Datexco, the margin of error for the survey is 3.7%, creating a statistical tie.

Interestingly, Petro led a poll conducted by the same company last week. This change is most likely attributed to the inclusion of former President Alvaro Uribe in the previous survey, despite him not actually being a candidate.

With Uribe being excluded from the latest poll, it appears those who originally favored him divided their votes between the two leading candidates. Peñalosa likely received more of Uribe’s votes as Uribe has endorsed Peñalosa for mayor.

Liberal candidate David Luna is in third place with 12.2% with the Cambio Radical Party candidate Carlos Fernando Galan immediately trailing him with 11.1%.

The poll surveyed 700 Bogotanos who intend to vote in the upcoming October election.
