Enrique Peñalosa officially registered as a candidate for the 2011 mayoral elections in Bogota on Wednesday.
He will run for mayor with the support of both the Green Party and the conservative Partido de la U.
The coalition between the two political parties has been a recent topic of debate for political members such as former presidential candidate and former head of the Green Party Antanas Mockus. Sergio Fajardo resigned from the board of directors for Partido de la U after the withdrawal of former Bogota mayor Antanas Mockus, who was unhappy with the political flirting between former President Alvaro Uribe and Peñalosa.
One week ago, the Green Party formally joined President Juan Manuel Santos’ political coalition of national unity.
Peñalosa said that the “union is meant to move the city forward.” The candidate is “very happy to count on the support of both President Santos and ex-President Uribe’s parties.”
