Alleged ‘parapolitics’ senator admits to prison party

by Edward Fox February 11, 2011

Colombia news - Juan Carlos Martinez

Jailed ex-Senator Juan Carlos Martinez, who was moved from Bogota’s La Picota prison last month for hosting a birthday party, admitted to inviting 20 to 25 people to the event, reports W Radio

The politician remained adamant that he had not violated prison regulations, stating, “I believe that it was not a crime and I do not deserve the absurd and arrogant decision of the minister of the interior to have me moved.”

In the same interview, Martinez also refuted claims made Monday by extradited paramilitary boss Ever Veloza Garcia, alias “H.H.,” that he had accepted support from the paramilitaries during his tenure as senator.

Martinez is currently in a prison in Barranquilla and being investigated for alleged links with paramilitary groups in the Valle del Cauca department in western Colombia.
