Over 1,000 tons of cocaine seized in Colombia since 1998

by Brandon Barrett March 30, 2012

Colombian police reported that they have seized more than a thousand tons of cocaine and coca base since 1998.

1,141,322 kilos of cocaine, 776,797 kilos of marijuana and 7,767 kilos of heroin were also confiscated and destroyed, stated the police’s Director of Counternarcotics General Luis Alberto Perez in a presentation in western Colombia.

“The goal for 2012 is the manual eradication of 20,000 hectares (approximately 50,000 acres)” of drug crops, said Perez.

Since Perez became director in 1998, 655,845 people have been arrested on drug trafficking charges, 1,923 of which were foreigners. 125 police died and 331 more were injured during the same period.
