Over 1 ton of cocaine seized in the Caribbean

by Caitlin Trent October 23, 2012

Colombian and U.S. authorities on Monday confiscated 1.23 tons of cocaine estimated to be worth $30 million, on a high-speed boat near the island of Serrana in the idyllic San Andres archipelago.

After receiving an alert from the U.S Navy, the Colombian counterpart dispatched a ship and helicopter to intercept the shipment, however no arrests were made as the occupants of the boat jumped overboard once they realized the presence of the authorities. Bales of cocaine were also thrown overboard, later to be recovered by Colombian Navy divers.

2.8 tons of cocaine have been confiscated thus far in October in six drug trafficking operations in the Colombian Caribbean waters. This year around 70 tons of cocaine in total have been siezed by the Colombian Navy, worth approximately 1.7 billion dollars, Terra news reported.
