Colombian president congratulates latest Olympic medalist

by Victoria Rossi August 9, 2012

Colombia

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos congratulated Oscar Muñoz on his Olympic bronze medal in taekwondo, according to a statement released on the president’s website Wednesday .

“Oscar, I would like to tell you as president – but also as a Colombian – how proud we all are of your triumph. It’s a victory for Colombia,” he said in a phone call to the 19-year-old medalist in 127-pound taekwondo category.

Muñoz, 19, beat Thailand’s Pen-Ek Karaket Wednesday to take home the bronze in the 2012 London Summer Olympics.

His win brings Colombia’s overall Olympic score to two silver and three bronze medals, improving the country’s all-time record that already was set by Caterine Ibarguen in the triple jump on Sunday.
