North Colombia landslide kills one, injures 10

by Toni Peters May 18, 2011

Colombia News - Landslide

One person was killed and 10 were injured after a landslide devastated a village in the north of Colombia, according to Colombian station Caracol Radio.

Relief agencies said that an avalanche of mud and stones in San Vicente de Chucuri washed away several houses in the lower part of the village, in the north east department of Santander.

Mayor Emilce Suarez said that the village is on high alert and the local hospital has reached maximum capacity. Authorities do not know if anyone is missing. The rainy season has caused the death of 23 people in the Santander department.

The road between the departmental capital Bucaramanga and Bogota was cut off by a landslide Tuesday evening.
