Medellin prosecutors said Wednesday there is no evidence to sustain charges that former Mayor Luis Perez used criminal groups in his 2011 reelection bid.
Perez was accused of teaming up with local gangs by then-mayor Alonso Salazar, who claimed his political enemy was trying to intimidate the electorate into voting for his controversial predecessor.
The claim cost Salazar heavily as he was banned from serving public office for 12 years for illegally interfering in the elections who were won by a 3% margin by Perez’ opponent, Anibal Gaviria.
The prosecutor who filed the foreclosure on the case announced that there was not documented evidence or testimony relating Perez to any illegal armed groups, closing the case on the grounds of a lack of a case from the offense.
Perez has claimed that he was robbed of an election victory because of Salazar’s accusations.
