The film which will represent Colombia in the 2013 Oscars will be El Cartel de las Sapos (The Cartel of the Snitches) announced the Colombian academy Thursday.
The board of directors of the Colombian Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences selected the film which was produced and directed by Carlos Moreno to represent Colombia in the Best Foreign Film category.
According to the board the Oscars are a “window to the world that display the best of our emerging talent and ability.”
On the selection of the film the board of directors said that “El Cartel de las Sapos represents a trend that includes the great global industry …… impeccable performances that transcend the ordinary, a film sure to be recognized and admired by audiences on many levels. But something just as important is that the creative artistic and technical is almost entirely Colombian. It is a homemade product with global flavor.”
Manolo Cardona, star and a producer of the film pledged to boost Colombian cinema on international platforms and said that he “proudly takes this wonderful honor.”
The film is a gritty crime drama based on the life of Andres Lopez Lopez alias “Florecita,” during his years involved with the notorious Norte del Valle cartel.
A lower class boy discovers the world of drug-trafficking as a way to provide him with the lifestyle and resources to win the heart of a girl he has loved since childhood who was previously unattainable. His boldness of youth sees him play a vital part in the notorious cartel. It is a story of love, bloodshed, crime and pain set in the dark and dirty underbelly of the Colombian crime world.
