Former mayor and current Bogota mayoral candidate Antanas Mockus must file his candidacy quickly to avoid being disqualified, El Espectador reported Thursday.
Mockus must file his candidacy before a new election law is signed that would prevent him from running for political office. The law prohibits heads of political parties from seeking political office for a year after they resign as head of their party.
Until recently, Mockus was head of Colombia’s Green Party and thus must file his candidacy before the law is passed if he hopes to run for mayor. The bill is expected to be signed into law this week, giving Mockus a matter of mere hours to declare his candidacy.
Mockus is an academic and two-time mayor of Bogota. In 2010 he ran for president on the Green Party ticket but was defeated by current President Juan Manuel Santos.
