Mockus considers alliance with Petro in Bogota mayor elections

by Marguerite Cawley June 2, 2011

Colombia news - Petro

Former Bogota Mayor Antanas Mockus said he will leave open the possibility of an alliance with the capital’s leftist mayoral candidate Gustavo Petro, local media reported Thursday.

The Green Party ex-mayor expressed gratitude to the candidate, stating, “I appreciate Gustavo’s invitation, I publicly reiterate my admiration, my respect and tenderness and I hope that in some way the paths lead at some moment in life to a construction together, I don’t know if it will happen now or later.”

Mockus’ declarations came as a response to the candidate’s campaign launch on Tuesday, during which he said that the doors to his party are open to Mockus.

The former mayor has threatened to leave the Green Party following the party’s Bogota mayoral candidate Enrique Peñalosa’s alliance with former President Alvaro Uribe and the rest of the Partido de la U, and backing by the majority of the party.
