Colombia: Dead minor was not Ecuadorean

by Linda Azodi November 16, 2010

Colombia news - FARC camp bomb raid

Colombia’s military said Tuesday that that the minor killed in an air raid on a FARC camp was not from Ecuador as initially thought, but was Colombian.

Armed forces commander Admiral Edgar Cely stated that the boy had an identity card in his possession which identified him as a Colombian citizen, reports CM&.

“In the belongings of the child they found a citizen card for refugees issued by the Ecuadorean Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Cely said. Cely said that the child was forced to join the FARC.

Colombia’s Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin announced Tuesday that the country will give her Ecuadorean counterpart Ricardo Patiño all the information they have on the deceased minor.

The death of an Ecuadorean in 2008 in a cross-border bombing raid led to a rupture in diplomatic ties between the neighboring countries.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is going to investigate the complaint Ecuador made against its neighboring country for the killing. Holguin said Tuesday that Colombia would “follow the processes established by the IAHCR”, reports CM&.
