Elida Patricia Castro has been chosen to represent Colombia in the Top Model of the World contest in Egypt this March.
Colombia’s national beauty contest selected the 24 year-old model who stood out for having the best catwalk. She is a striking 5’10” and has been called the “Colombian Naomi Campbell” because of her resemblance to the British supermodel.
In 2010 Castro competed for the title of Miss Cartagena, but failed. Undeterred by the failure, she continued to pursue her dream and, in 2012, went on to represent Cartagena in the national beauty contest.
“I want to show that black and middle class women can win contests as important as the national beauty contest,” said Elida.
Top Model is considered one of the most prestigious modelling contests in the world. Contestants are judged on their personality, style and runway work, as well as appearance. This year Castro will be competing with 40 other women from different countries.
Colombia has a recent history of success at the Top Model contest. In 2009 Carolina Rodriguez won and in 2012 Melina Ramirez Serna came second.
