Medellin’s mayor unveiled a new School of Music for the community of Santa Elena in the mountains of Medellin, as part of an ongoing project for cultural development in the city.
The Santa Elena music school is the first in the city to be specifically constructed to optimize the learning and practice of music. An estimated 200 children and young persons will benefit from the project each year.
The school specializes in wind instruments and pays homage to the Santa Elena-born musician and artist Blas Emilio Atehortua.
The Mayor’s Office invested $1.2 million dollars in the “Blas Emilio Atehortua” school, that occupies a space of 3,914 square feet with 2,519 square feet of public space.
The newly-constructed school has four rooms for group lessons, 10 individual study rooms, an auditorium, administrative spaces, a cafe, and common areas equipped with accommodations for persons with physical disabilities.
