Medellin gets switched on as it prepares for Christmas

by Joey O'Gorman October 9, 2012

medellin

It’s not even Halloween but already the authorities of Colombia’s second city Medellin are preparing for Christmas, stringing what will be more than 20 miles of brilliant lights around the city.

This year’s theme for the famous Christmas lights of Medellin will be nature, life and light and according to the mayor’s office there will be strings of flower-like chains which will emit sounds.

The lights along the river in Medellin and main thoroughfare Avenida La Playa will be switched on for the first time on November 17, when there will be a test lighting during the annual general meeting of cities and lighting professionals from around the world (LUCI).

Medellin is the only South American city that is part of the Luci project which will hold it’s 10th annual meeting in the Colombian city between the 14th and 17th of November.

The lights will be turned on again on November 28 and 29 especially for the Madonna concert in the city, and the official “switching-on” will be celebrated on December 1.
