Making fruit salad the Cartagena way

by Jacob Stringer January 16, 2013

Colombia culture - fruit salad

A street vendor revealed just how to make “Cholao” — the ever-so-popular fruit salad in Cartagena.

This fruit salad is originally from southern Colombia but with a few local changes it is now much loved by Cartageneros. According to Camilo Diaz, it is the perfect snack for a hot climate.

Here’s how Camilo does it:

1. Place some crushed ice in the bottom of a cup and add a little lemon juice and fruit syrup.

2. Add chopped fruit. In Cartagena, they go for watermelon, mango, passion fruit, papaya, and banana.

3. Place more crushed ice on top.

4. Add more syrup and condensed milk to satisfy that sweet tooth.

5. Enjoy.
