M5.2 earthquake hits east Colombia

by Mimi Yagoub February 17, 2014

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck Arauca State in east Colombia in the early hours of Monday. The epicenter was less than half a mile from the town and municipality of Tame.

Colombia’s National Geological Service Ingeominas reported on Monday that an earthquake measuring 5.2 in magnitude had hit Arauca State at 4:41AM, with a depth of 21.4 miles.

The location of the epicenter was 0.42 miles from the town and municipality of Tame, though the tremor was also felt in the states of Casanare, Santander, Boyaca, Norte de Santander, and in the capital city of Bogota.

The closest capital to the quake was the city of Arauca, at 76 miles away.

Colombian media outlet Caracol Radio informed hours later that in Boyaca, where the seismic activity was strongly felt, there were no reports of material or human losses or injuries.

Caracol also reported that the earthquake was notably strong in the Boyaca municipalities of Tunja, Paipa, Duitama, Sogamoso and Chiquinquira.
