William Garcia Alban, alias “Indio William,” is accused of orchestrating the 2006 murder of ten agents from Colombia’s “DIJIN” secret police and one informant. He is also accused of being the military leader of the Rastrojos in Valle del Cauca.
Speaking to local media General Fabio Alejandro Castañeda, commander of Cali Metropolitan Police, confirmed that Indio William had been among their most wanted criminals. “He was a very dangerous person for the region,” said Castañeda, who also linked Indio William to the FARC.
Castañeda explained that the operation was based on police reconnaissance and intelligence provided by an informant. The arrest was made after police located the suspect in a country estate in the Village of Agua Mona in Restrepo Municipality.
Indio William rose up in the organization under the guidance of former crime boss Diego Montoya. Security services claimed that he had inherited the position following the 2008 capture of Omar Garcia Varela, alias “Capachivo”.
He is charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated crimes, drugs and arms trafficking, forced displacement, money laundering and murder. He is believed to have been responsible for over one hundred deaths in region, as a result of his overseeing the distribution and sale of cocaine, marijuana and heroin in alliance with the FARC.
