Kidnapped farmer rescued by army in southcentral Colombia

by Tom Heyden June 6, 2011

Colombia News - Military, Army

A farmer who had been kidnapped and held to ransom by common criminals is rescued by the army on Sunday.

Jose Ramon Cifuentes Ramirez was kidnapped in the early hours of Sunday morning in the municipality of Calamar, in the southcentral department of Guaviare.

The army has indicated that common criminals were behind the abduction, who demanded a $6,700 (COP12 million) ransom.

Army troops reacted quickly to the kidnapping in an attempt to prevent the farmer being taken into a dense, jungle region of the department. After tracking Cifuentes and his kidnappers down, a shootout between the army and the criminals culminated in the arrest and injury of two supposed kidnappers.

Cifuentes was released unharmed on Sunday afternoon.
