by Jean Carrere November 11, 2011

Jorge 40

Extradited paramilitary leader “Jorge 40” was sentenced to 26 years in prison by a Colombian court on Friday.

Rodrigo Tovar Pupo, alias Jorge 40, was sentenced for his involvement in 20 murders in the northern Atlantico department between 2004 and 2005.

Tovar was the head of the Northern Block of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) until he demobilized with a thousand of his men in 2006.

The murders ordered by Tovar were executed by the front “Jose Pablo Diaz,” led by Edgar Ignacio Fierro Florez, alias “Antonio.”

The former paramilitary was extradited to the United States in 2008 where he was charged with drug-trafficking.

A laptop computer belonging to Tovar was seized by the Colombian police in 2006, containing information on over 500 murders, started investigations into ties between the paramilitaries and Colombia’s political and business elite.
