Jailed ex-Bogota official claims discrimination by prison authorities

by Tom Heyden May 26, 2011

colombia news - innocencio melendez

An imprisoned former Bogota official, accused of involvement in the public works corruption scandal, claims he has been discriminated against by prison authorities, La W Radio reported Thursday.

Innocencio Melendez, the former legal assistant of the Institute for Urban Development (IDU), denounced Colombia’s prison authority INPEC for discrimination.

The former official and his lawyer complained that while disgraced ex-Bogota comptroller Miguel Angel Moralesrussi was transported from prison to court for trial in a special car, Melendez was taken in handcuffs in a vehicle along with other prisoners accused of various different crimes.

The Inspector General’s Office and the Prosecutor General’s Office have asked for official copies of the complaint in order to advance the relevant disciplinary investigations.
