Italian tourist commits suicide in Cartagena

by Julia Myska June 13, 2013

An Italian tourist has committed suicide in the Caribbean city of Cartagena, Colombian media reported Thursday.

Nearby the historic town of the coastal city, the reportedly 49-year old Italian tourist threw himself off the roof of the Don Pedro de Heredia’s hotel where he was staying.

“The truth is that I never thought he was going to jump,” Alvaro Chamorro who witnessed the incident was quoted as saying by El Tiempo. “I got distracted talking until we heard the blow.”

According to Chamorro, the problem was that the ambulance took nearly 45 minutes to arrive the scene. “He was dying, he practically died there,” he said.

A hotel worker told El Tiempo that Stefano had first arrived the city a month ago. After leaving he returned again approximately a week ago. “He had a normal behavior, as any tourist coming with a vacation plan, to enjoy the historic city,” Yesid Eljach said.

A police report reportedly indicated that the Italian jumped holding the photo of a woman.

The man was taken to the local San Jose de Torices hospital, where he died of his injuries.
