The Bogota financial watchdog has launched an inquiry into $1 million worth of suspicious contracts related to last year’s U20 soccer World Cup in Colombia, reported Colombian media on Monday.
The investigation will focus on the activities of Ada Edurne Camacho, the official responsible for awarding the contracts.
Among the contracts being examined are a $55,000 award to a foreign body “to highlight the rich ethnic and cultural history of the Colombian people” and a $2,000 agreement with a shamen “to keep rain away during the day.”
Investigators will also look into catering contracts and officials’ expenses. Inspector General Mario Solano Calderon said, “there is a contract to provide food for one day and the person is paid for 20 days.”
He added, “the executive producer was paid 26 million pesos ($14,000) for the 40 days they had to give the organization.”
Caracol Radio stated the unfolding events are the result of an initial “process of fiscal responsibility” launched against the Institute of Recreation and Sport, due to discrepancies between the $2.6 million spent and the services received.
